Carnitine, or transliteration carnitine, is an amino acid that belongs to the quaternary ammonium cation complex and can be biosynthetically synthesized from lysine and methionine amino acids. There are two stereoisomeric isomers of carnitine: including biologically active L-carnitine, and its non-biologically active enantiomeric D-carnitine. Compounds that are chemically synthesized and both L and D carnitine are present are generally labeled as "DL-carnitine." In China, L-carnitine has a more common trade name: L-carnitine or L-carnitine. L-Carnitine was originally discovered as a growth factor for Tenebrio molitor, which was once named Vitamin Bt. In living cells, when fat metabolism produces energy, carnitine is required to transport fatty acids from the cytosol to the mitochondria to prevent fatty acids from accumulating in the cells. Around the world, carnitine is often packaged as a nutritional supplement and is claimed to help burn fat and help lose weight.
